Technical Q&A HW98
Why didn't I boot from the CD?

Q: I used the snag key "C" to boot, but I didn't boot from the CD. Why?

A: On NewWorld machines (Open Firmware version 3.0 and later) if Open Firmware detects the "C" key held down as you start the machine, it will attempt to boot from the devalias "cd", which specifies the internal CD-ROM drive (i.e., the CD-ROM or DVD drive that is shipped with the machine). If there is no CD in the drive or the CD in the drive is not capable of booting the machine, Open Firmware will give up and search for another boot device.
